John Le Messurier

Who do you think you are kidding Mr Hitler? That was the sound track to one of Britain’s best loved comedy shows based on the antics of the nation’s home front, the ladies and men left behind in the war to defend our shores.

John Le Messurier was best known as Sergeant Wilson in the hit BBC sitcom.  He was born in Bedford on 5 April 1912.  He had a very successful film career starring in the likes of Hancock’s Half Hour and The Rebel.

John won a BAFTA for Best Television actor in 1971 for his role in Dennis Potter’s Traitor, his only industry award.
